Recruiting Timeline

The most comprehensive lacrosse recruiting timeline available — built from official NCAA rules, coach research, and real recruiting data.

Division

Note: This timeline is primarily structured around D1 rules and contact dates. Athletes pursuing D2, D3, or NAIA programs follow many of the same steps and milestones — building visibility, sending emails, attending camps, and developing film. The key differences are contact timing and scholarship structure, which you can explore using the division tabs above.

September 1 — Junior Year

The most important date in women's D1 lacrosse recruiting. Coaches can now call, text, email, make off-campus contact, extend verbal scholarship offers, and schedule official visits for the first time.

Before Sept 1: D1 coaches CANNOT contact you directly — they can only answer Yes/No questions to your club or high school coach. But they ARE watching film and tournaments. This is your window to build visibility.

During these windows, D1 coaches cannot have any in-person contact. Phone, email, and text remain open during Dead Periods. During Recruiting Shutdowns, ALL communication is prohibited.

Coach Rules: 🚫 D1 coaches CANNOT contact you. They may only answer Yes/No questions from your club or HS coach. D2, D3, and NAIA coaches can communicate freely.

Recruit Plan Insight

Roughly 14.4% of HS lacrosse players reach any NCAA level. The habits you build freshman year — SportsRecruits profile, film, school list, academics, outreach — determine which side of that number you're on.

Sophomore Year — Fall & Winter

Fall Winter
Active Visibility

Coach Rules: 🚫 D1 coaches still cannot contact you directly. They are building their watch lists from profiles, film, and tournament evaluations.

Recruit Plan Insight

D1 coaches are actively researching prospects during sophomore year even though they can't call you yet. Athletes who show up in their IWLCA profile and send professional emails create a head start before Sept 1.

Sophomore Year — Spring & Summer

Spring Summer
Final Pre-Sept 1 Push

Athlete Actions

  • Film all spring HS games and post an updated highlight reel
  • Register with the NCAA Eligibility Center (do NOT wait until junior year)
  • Send a final email before each summer tournament with updated film + transcript
  • Include your IWLCA profile link in every communication
  • Target schools that offer prospect days at summer camps — attend if possible
  • July 1: Service Academy coaches (Army, Navy, Air Force) can officially extend offers — note this as a key date if you are considering a service academy
  • This is your last full recruiting window before Sept 1 — every email, tournament appearance, and film update counts
  • Final pre-Sept 1 push: Send a personalized email in August to each target school with your updated transcript, most recent highlight reel, and 1–2 sentences about why that specific school fits you. This is the email that gets you on the Sept 1 call list.

Coach Rules: 🚫 D1 coaches are in evaluation periods during summer — they are watching you at tournaments. No direct contact with you, but they ARE forming their Sept 1 call lists.

Recruit Plan Insight

The athletes who get called on September 1 are the ones coaches have been watching for 2 years. Use summer tournaments to be visible. Every email you sent freshman and sophomore year built toward this moment. The final pre-Sept 1 email is your last chance to make an impression before phones ring.

August 1 — Junior Year

Summer
Campus Visits Open

Athlete Actions

  • Official and unofficial campus visits can now begin for D1 programs
  • While rules technically allow some communication and visits starting August 1, many schools wait until September 1 to begin actively engaging recruits — coaches are still evaluating in August
  • Visits are unlimited for D1 (no longer capped at 5 — a recent rule change)
  • Each official visit lasts up to 48 hours; school covers travel, lodging, meals
  • Unofficial visits (you pay your own way) are also unrestricted — but coaches are typically not permitted to be involved in a recruit's unofficial visit before August 1 of junior year
  • Watch for last-minute prospect days in August — D1 coaches often host these as they finalize class decisions. Attend if you can.
  • Note: Aug 28–Sept 3 is a dead period. Coaches can begin calling and texting on Sept 1 but cannot meet you in-person until Sept 4. Plan visits for before Aug 28 or after Sept 4.

Coach Rules: ⚠️ Aug 28–Sept 3 is a DEAD PERIOD overlapping with Sept 1. During this window, coaches CAN call, text, and email starting Sept 1 — but CANNOT have any in-person contact until Sept 4.

Recruit Plan Insight

The new rules allowing official visits in junior year (previously senior-year only) have accelerated the timeline significantly. Top programs often lock in recruits before senior year even starts. August is a critical window — be ready to visit on short notice.

September 1 — Junior Year

Fall
Full Contact Begins

Athlete Actions

  • D1 coaches can now call, text, email, and make verbal scholarship offers
  • If you've received an offer, coaches will reach out to set up official or unofficial visits. (Coaches sometimes save official visits for later in the process.) Prioritize attending these — seeing a campus in person is essential to making the right decision.
  • Pre-reads at D3 schools may begin now (if applicable in your search)
  • Early offers will come — evaluate fit carefully, not just prestige
  • Keep your school list updated and continue contacting programs you haven't heard from
  • Service Academy coaches (Army, Navy, Air Force) also open full contact — don't overlook them

Coach Rules: ✅ D1 coaches CAN now make off-campus contact, send recruiting materials, make verbal offers, schedule official visits, and call/text/email directly.

Recruit Plan Insight

Only 3.3% of high school lacrosse players reach D1. This window is when that group gets determined. Respond to coaches promptly and professionally — how you communicate matters as much as how you play.

Junior Year — Active Recruiting

Fall Winter Spring
Visits & Decisions

Athlete Actions

  • Complete official visits and evaluate each program on athletics, academics, culture, and financial fit
  • Use the Net Price Calculator (NPC) on every school's website to estimate your real cost
  • Keep updating film each season — coaches want to see continued development
  • If still uncommitted, continue emailing coaches every 2–3 weeks with updates
  • A verbal commitment is non-binding — keep working on your grades, test scores, and your game
  • Discuss scholarship strategically: D1 lacrosse is an equivalency sport with 12.6 scholarships split across the whole roster

Coach Rules: Coaches are finalizing their recruiting classes. Most top D1 programs fill key roster spots by end of junior year.

Recruit Plan Insight

D1 lacrosse scholarships average far less than a full ride — coaches split 12.6 scholarships across the entire roster. Ask specifically what your package looks like and whether it can be renegotiated annually based on performance.

Senior Year

Fall Winter Spring
Commitment & Signing

Athlete Actions

  • The National Letter of Intent (NLI) was eliminated by the NCAA in October 2024. Athletes now sign a written offer of athletic financial aid (grant-in-aid) directly with the university — this is still a binding financial agreement.
  • Early signing period (typically November) and regular signing period (typically February/April) remain as windows for signing written financial aid offers.
  • For D3 and Ivy League athletes who receive no athletic money: the equivalent commitment mechanism is applying Early Decision (ED) to the school. ED is binding.
  • National Signing Day remains a cultural milestone for celebrating commitments, even though the NLI document no longer exists.
  • D2 and D3 programs actively recruit through senior spring and offer incredible opportunities to compete at a high level. If you're still in the process, keep going — the right program exists at every level.
  • Confirm your financial aid package in writing before signing anything.
  • Once you've committed, notify all other coaches who were recruiting you — it's the respectful and professional thing to do. Also update your SportsRecruits profile to show your commitment so other coaches know you're off the market.

Coach Rules: Advocating for your application with the admissions office and finalizing financial aid packages.

Recruit Plan Insight

Recruiting continues at every level through senior spring. D2 and D3 programs offer real competition, strong academics, and financial packages that work. The right fit matters more than the division label.

The Perfect Coach Email: What to Include Every Time

Coaches receive hundreds of emails. Make yours easy to evaluate immediately. Send every 2–3 weeks with a new update — game results, new film, academic news.

IdentityGrad year, position, club team name, jersey #, high school
AcademicsGPA, SAT/ACT score (when available), intended major
Highlight FilmDirect link — club & HS competition, updated each season. Never use prospect-day-only footage.
Tournament ScheduleUpcoming events with dates & location so coaches can plan evaluations
Profile LinkIWLCA (women) or IMLCARecruits (men) recruiting profile URL
Why This School1–2 specific sentences about their program, not a copy-paste. Coaches notice.

Recruit Plan Insight

“Follow up every 2–3 weeks — not every day. Share something new each time: a game result, updated film, a grade improvement. Coaches are watching who stays consistent.”

High-Academic Schools

If you are interested in NESCACs, Ivies, or other academically selective programs, include a link to your transcript on your SportsRecruits profile and reference that link in every email you send to those coaches.

Highlight Film: What Coaches Actually Want to See

Do This

  • Update your reel every season — fall club, spring HS
  • Show both club AND high school competition footage
  • Lead with your 3–4 best plays in the first 60 seconds
  • Keep it 3–5 minutes max — coaches won't watch 10
  • Include the full field view so coaches can see your reads
  • Include your jersey number clearly in the description

Avoid This

  • Do NOT use prospect day or clinic footage — coaches recognize it
  • Don't open with warm-ups or sideline shots
  • Avoid music that overrides the crowd noise
  • Don't use slow-motion for every clip — it pads run time
  • Never send a film link that requires a login or download

Recruit Plan Insight

“Upload to Hudl or YouTube (unlisted). Always include your IWLCA/IMLCARecruits profile link alongside the film link — it gives coaches your academic data in one click.”

Recruiting Periods Explained

NCAA official definitions — these rules govern every interaction between coaches and prospects.

Contact Period

Coaches can have face-to-face contact with you or your parents off-campus, watch you compete, and visit your high school. All forms of communication are fully open.

Evaluation Period

Coaches can watch you compete and be present at your school, but cannot have face-to-face conversations with you off-campus. They are assessing your play and academics from a distance.

Quiet Period

In-person contact is only permitted on the coach's campus. They cannot attend your games, visit your school, or meet you off-campus. Phone, email, and text communication remain open.

Dead Period

No in-person contact anywhere — coaches cannot watch you play or visit your school. Phone calls, texts, and emails are still allowed. Unofficial and official visits are prohibited.

Recruiting ShutdownMost Restrictive

The most restrictive period. Absolutely no form of recruiting is permitted — no contacts, no evaluations, no visits (official or unofficial), no correspondence, and no phone calls. This is a complete communication blackout. In 2025–26, shutdown periods include Dec 22–26, Dec 31–Jan 2, and other designated dates. Check your specific sport's official NCAA recruiting calendar.
