January 1 — Junior Year
Official visits (paid by the school) can begin January 1 of junior year. D3 coaches can contact you at any time — but this date unlocks the visit process and is when recruiting gets most intense.
D3 is the largest NCAA division with 285 women's lacrosse programs — more than D1 and D2 combined. No athletic scholarships, but strong academic merit aid and need-based aid can make total cost very competitive.
Freshman Year

- Ask coaches directly about the academic pre-read process for their institution
- Keep your GPA strong — coaches will run pre-reads and close doors if grades don't qualify

Junior Year — January 1
Athlete Actions
- Official visits (school pays travel, lodging, meals) open January 1 of junior year
- The Academic Pre-Read is critical: coaches submit your transcript to admissions to confirm you're admissible — this must happen before they can advocate for you
- Visit your top 3–5 schools — use the visit to evaluate coaches, team culture, campus fit
- Meet with the Financial Aid office directly (not just the coach) during every visit
- NESCAC schools (Amherst, Bowdoin, Williams, etc.): coaches can begin building interest but cannot formally offer support until July 1
- Apply your Net Price Calculator results — what's the real 4-year cost at each school?

Rising Senior — July 1
Athlete Actions
- July 1: NESCAC and similar selective conferences can formally offer admissions support ("slots")
- A support offer means the coach is putting real weight behind your application with admissions
- If offered support, you will almost always be asked to commit to Early Decision (binding)
- Carefully evaluate: if you commit ED, you forfeit financial aid leverage and other offers
- Non-NESCAC D3 programs: continue building relationships — many programs recruit year-round
- Service Academy coaches (Army West Point, Navy) also operate on a July 1 contact timeline for women's lacrosse

Senior Year

- Apply Early Decision if you have coach support — this is the standard path in D3 with support
- Regular Decision is viable for D3 schools that don't require ED commitment
- Submit FAFSA as early as possible — D3 financial aid is complex and school-specific
- D3 recruiting continues through spring — programs fill late roster spots regularly
- If not yet committed, contact coaches directly: "Do you have any remaining spots for my class?"
- Call the financial aid office at any school where you're accepted — aid packages can often be discussed

The Perfect Coach Email: What to Include Every Time
Coaches receive hundreds of emails. Make yours easy to evaluate immediately. Send every 2–3 weeks with a new update — game results, new film, academic news.

High-Academic Schools
If you are interested in NESCACs, Ivies, or other academically selective programs, include a link to your transcript on your SportsRecruits profile and reference that link in every email you send to those coaches.
Highlight Film: What Coaches Actually Want to See
Do This
- Update your reel every season — fall club, spring HS
- Show both club AND high school competition footage
- Lead with your 3–4 best plays in the first 60 seconds
- Keep it 3–5 minutes max — coaches won't watch 10
- Include the full field view so coaches can see your reads
- Include your jersey number clearly in the description
Avoid This
- Do NOT use prospect day or clinic footage — coaches recognize it
- Don't open with warm-ups or sideline shots
- Avoid music that overrides the crowd noise
- Don't use slow-motion for every clip — it pads run time
- Never send a film link that requires a login or download

Recruiting Periods Explained
NCAA official definitions — these rules govern every interaction between coaches and prospects.
Coaches can have face-to-face contact with you or your parents off-campus, watch you compete, and visit your high school. All forms of communication are fully open.
Coaches can watch you compete and be present at your school, but cannot have face-to-face conversations with you off-campus. They are assessing your play and academics from a distance.
In-person contact is only permitted on the coach's campus. They cannot attend your games, visit your school, or meet you off-campus. Phone, email, and text communication remain open.
No in-person contact anywhere — coaches cannot watch you play or visit your school. Phone calls, texts, and emails are still allowed. Unofficial and official visits are prohibited.
The most restrictive period. Absolutely no form of recruiting is permitted — no contacts, no evaluations, no visits (official or unofficial), no correspondence, and no phone calls. This is a complete communication blackout. In 2025–26, shutdown periods include Dec 22–26, Dec 31–Jan 2, and other designated dates. Check your specific sport's official NCAA recruiting calendar.
