Note: This timeline is primarily structured around D1 rules and contact dates. Athletes pursuing D2, D3, or NAIA programs follow many of the same steps and milestones — building visibility, sending emails, attending camps, and developing film. September 1 — Junior Year
Division I men's lacrosse coaches can begin direct contact, send recruiting materials, make verbal scholarship offers, and schedule official visits starting September 1 of the athlete's junior year. This is the same critical date as Women's D1 — both sports use September 1.
Before September 1, D1 coaches cannot initiate contact with you. They are watching film, tracking tournament results, and building their call lists. The athletes who get called September 1 have been preparing visibility for 2 years.

August 1 — Junior Year
Athlete Actions
- Official and unofficial visits open for junior year — schedule your highest-priority programs first
- Important: Per the 2025-26 official calendar, Aug 1–4 is a contact period but Aug 5–11 is a quiet period and Aug 12–31 is a dead period. Plan visits for Aug 1–4 or after Sept 1.
- D1 recruits can take unlimited official visits (the previous 5-visit cap has been removed)
- Each official visit: up to 48 hours, school covers transportation, lodging, meals, and 3 home event tickets
- Schedule visits to schools where there is genuine mutual interest — coaches track who visits and when
- Ask each coaching staff the same questions so you can compare programs fairly

- Off-campus contact opens fully — coaches can meet you at events and visit your school
- Continue visiting campuses and narrowing your list based on fit: athletic, academic, financial, social
- Verbal commitments are common this fall — evaluate each offer carefully
- Ask about the 12.6 scholarship budget: "What does my scholarship look like and can it grow?"
- Keep your recruitment open across D1, D2, and D3 — the right level matters more than the label

Senior Year
Athlete Actions
- The NLI was eliminated in 2024. Athletes now sign a written offer of athletic financial aid (grant-in-aid) directly with the university — this is still a binding agreement.
- Early signing period (typically November) and regular signing period (typically February) remain as windows for signing written financial aid offers.
- Confirm all financial aid details in writing before signing.
- D2 and D3 programs actively recruit through senior spring and offer incredible opportunities to compete at a high level. If you're still in the process, keep going.
- Once committed, notify all other coaches who were recruiting you. Update your SportsRecruits profile to show your commitment.

The Perfect Coach Email: What to Include Every Time
Coaches receive hundreds of emails. Make yours easy to evaluate immediately. Send every 2–3 weeks with a new update — game results, new film, academic news.

High-Academic Schools
If you are interested in NESCACs, Ivies, or other academically selective programs, include a link to your transcript on your SportsRecruits profile and reference that link in every email you send to those coaches.
Highlight Film: What Coaches Actually Want to See
Do This
- Update your reel every season — fall club, spring HS
- Show both club AND high school competition footage
- Lead with your 3–4 best plays in the first 60 seconds
- Keep it 3–5 minutes max — coaches won't watch 10
- Include the full field view so coaches can see your reads
- Include your jersey number clearly in the description
Avoid This
- Do NOT use prospect day or clinic footage — coaches recognize it
- Don't open with warm-ups or sideline shots
- Avoid music that overrides the crowd noise
- Don't use slow-motion for every clip — it pads run time
- Never send a film link that requires a login or download

Recruiting Periods Explained
NCAA official definitions — these rules govern every interaction between coaches and prospects.
Coaches can have face-to-face contact with you or your parents off-campus, watch you compete, and visit your high school. All forms of communication are fully open.
Coaches can watch you compete and be present at your school, but cannot have face-to-face conversations with you off-campus. They are assessing your play and academics from a distance.
In-person contact is only permitted on the coach's campus. They cannot attend your games, visit your school, or meet you off-campus. Phone, email, and text communication remain open.
No in-person contact anywhere — coaches cannot watch you play or visit your school. Phone calls, texts, and emails are still allowed. Unofficial and official visits are prohibited.
The most restrictive period. Absolutely no form of recruiting is permitted — no contacts, no evaluations, no visits (official or unofficial), no correspondence, and no phone calls. This is a complete communication blackout. In 2025–26, shutdown periods include Dec 22–26, Dec 31–Jan 2, and other designated dates. Check your specific sport's official NCAA recruiting calendar.
