CRITICAL MILESTONED2 Men's Lacrosse

June 15 — After Sophomore Year

D2 coaches can begin direct contact after June 15 of sophomore year — calls, texts, emails, and off-campus meetings. One dead period exists: Nov 10–12, 2025 (48 hours before initial signing date).

D2 men's lacrosse is growing rapidly with 79 programs and expanding rosters. These programs offer real scholarship money, high-quality competition, and often more playing time than a bench spot at D1.

Freshman Year

All Year
Foundation & Outreach

Athlete Actions

  • Create your IMLCARecruits profile and target D2 programs on your school list
  • Attend D2 camps and showcases — evaluation opportunities begin immediately
  • Email D2 coaches: your outreach will be answered; coaches can respond before June 15
  • Film all games and build a highlight reel focused on your strengths and position skills
  • Research scholarship structure: D2 equivalency programs divide aid among the roster

Coach Rules: 🚫 D2 coaches CANNOT initiate contact before June 15. They can respond to athlete outreach at any time.

Recruit Plan Insight

D2 men's lacrosse is one of the fastest-growing sectors in college athletics. Programs are competitive, recruiting classes are smaller, and coaches value athletes who demonstrate genuine interest early.

June 15 — After Sophomore Year

Summer
Communication Opens

Athlete Actions

  • Coaches can now call, text, and email directly — respond professionally and promptly
  • Schedule campus visits and begin in-person conversations about fit
  • Ask about scholarship breakdown: what is the typical aid package and how does it work?
  • Evaluate programs on academics, coaching staff, facilities, and team culture
  • D2 coaches often attend the same summer showcases as D1 coaches — maximize your film exposure

Coach Rules: ✅ D2 coaches CAN contact you directly, schedule visits, and make verbal scholarship discussions.

Recruit Plan Insight

D2 offers more financial flexibility than D1 — coaches can combine athletic scholarships with academic merit aid to create competitive total packages. Always ask: "What does a typical package look like for an athlete at my level?"

Junior Year — Active Recruiting

Fall Winter Spring
Visits & Narrowing

Athlete Actions

  • Complete official visits — evaluate athletic, academic, financial, and social fit at each school
  • Use the Net Price Calculator on every school website to model your real cost
  • Keep updating film each season — coaches want to see continued development
  • Ask about walk-on policies: new roster limits may change walk-on availability
  • Verbal commitments are common junior fall — evaluate each offer on its full merits

Coach Rules: Evaluating prospects at showcases and games. Most D2 programs complete their recruiting classes by end of junior year.

Recruit Plan Insight

D2 athletes typically have more time to focus on academics and campus life than D1. With 79 programs, there's a D2 school at nearly every academic and geographic preference point.

Senior Year

Fall Winter Spring
Decision & Signing

Athlete Actions

  • Sign your written offer of athletic financial aid (grant-in-aid) — the NLI was eliminated in 2024, but the financial aid agreement is still binding. Confirm all terms in writing.
  • D2 programs actively recruit through senior spring and offer incredible opportunities. If you're still in the process, keep going — the right program exists at every level.
  • Layer FAFSA financial aid with athletic scholarship for maximum total aid
  • Once committed, notify all other coaches who were recruiting you. Update your SportsRecruits profile to show your commitment.

Coach Rules: Completing roster and finalizing financial aid packages.

Recruit Plan Insight

D2 recruiting seasons are longer than D1 — coaches actively recruit through senior spring. If you haven't found the right fit by fall, keep your profile active and continue contacting coaches.

The Perfect Coach Email: What to Include Every Time

Coaches receive hundreds of emails. Make yours easy to evaluate immediately. Send every 2–3 weeks with a new update — game results, new film, academic news.

IdentityGrad year, position, club team name, jersey #, high school
AcademicsGPA, SAT/ACT score (when available), intended major
Highlight FilmDirect link — club & HS competition, updated each season. Never use prospect-day-only footage.
Tournament ScheduleUpcoming events with dates & location so coaches can plan evaluations
Profile LinkIWLCA (women) or IMLCARecruits (men) recruiting profile URL
Why This School1–2 specific sentences about their program, not a copy-paste. Coaches notice.

Recruit Plan Insight

“Follow up every 2–3 weeks — not every day. Share something new each time: a game result, updated film, a grade improvement. Coaches are watching who stays consistent.”

High-Academic Schools

If you are interested in NESCACs, Ivies, or other academically selective programs, include a link to your transcript on your SportsRecruits profile and reference that link in every email you send to those coaches.

Highlight Film: What Coaches Actually Want to See

Do This

  • Update your reel every season — fall club, spring HS
  • Show both club AND high school competition footage
  • Lead with your 3–4 best plays in the first 60 seconds
  • Keep it 3–5 minutes max — coaches won't watch 10
  • Include the full field view so coaches can see your reads
  • Include your jersey number clearly in the description

Avoid This

  • Do NOT use prospect day or clinic footage — coaches recognize it
  • Don't open with warm-ups or sideline shots
  • Avoid music that overrides the crowd noise
  • Don't use slow-motion for every clip — it pads run time
  • Never send a film link that requires a login or download

Recruit Plan Insight

“Upload to Hudl or YouTube (unlisted). Always include your IWLCA/IMLCARecruits profile link alongside the film link — it gives coaches your academic data in one click.”

Recruiting Periods Explained

NCAA official definitions — these rules govern every interaction between coaches and prospects.

Contact Period

Coaches can have face-to-face contact with you or your parents off-campus, watch you compete, and visit your high school. All forms of communication are fully open.

Evaluation Period

Coaches can watch you compete and be present at your school, but cannot have face-to-face conversations with you off-campus. They are assessing your play and academics from a distance.

Quiet Period

In-person contact is only permitted on the coach's campus. They cannot attend your games, visit your school, or meet you off-campus. Phone, email, and text communication remain open.

Dead Period

No in-person contact anywhere — coaches cannot watch you play or visit your school. Phone calls, texts, and emails are still allowed. Unofficial and official visits are prohibited.

Recruiting ShutdownMost Restrictive

The most restrictive period. Absolutely no form of recruiting is permitted — no contacts, no evaluations, no visits (official or unofficial), no correspondence, and no phone calls. This is a complete communication blackout. In 2025–26, shutdown periods include Dec 22–26, Dec 31–Jan 2, and other designated dates. Check your specific sport's official NCAA recruiting calendar.
